Building
works at educational establishments often
present special challenges because it
is usually essential to carry them out
during the establishment’s holiday
periods and within a demanding timescale,
without, of course, compromising the quality
of the end product. Over a number of years,
Carter Construction have worked on a variety
of projects for a number of individual
colleges within Oxford University as well
as for independent and state schools in
Oxfordshire. We have also worked directly
for the University Surveyor’s Office.
College
Project A
Now
a conference centre and administration
HQ for a new science park development,
this Grade II listed farmhouse required
complete refurbishment including all-new
mechanical and electrical services. An
extensive steel framework was installed
to support the upper floors. On the ground
floor, the original flagstones were taken
up then re-laid on a new concrete ground
bearing slab.
College
Project B
When
the bursary was re-located within this
college, use of tutorial and seminar rooms
continued above the site of the extensive
refurbishment works. The rooms were up-graded
to comply with current fire regulations
and re-wired with new data and telecom
provision. In the basement refurbishment
included tanking.
College Project
C
This
exciting study room for use by boys at
a renowned independent school locally
was built to make good of space within
the confines of the existing premises.
The new steel framed building is oval
in structure and is complete with mechanical,
electrical and IT installations, all linked
to the main building

The removal of the existing commercial kitchen and installation of a new kitchen working within the very delicate restraints of a Grade I listed building with limited access. The refurbishment works included not only the new kitchen but also walk-in fridge/freezers, food preparation areas, a new servery for the College and showers, changing rooms, lockers and laundry areas for all of the staff. A new lift shaft was also constructed through the building involving archaeological excavations in the lower basement area and passing up through five storeys. All new mechanical, electrical and ventilation services were incorporated in the scheme, connecting on to the most modern cooking equipment available.
