Formed over 70 years ago, WG Carter has a long history as a high quality builder in Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds. WG Carter is now run by James Robertson, supported by Paul and Roger Carter who are grandsons of the founder.
Many of our employees have been with us for over ten years and that brings with it vital continuity and stability. Clients and professionals are always pleased to see faces they recognise and people they respect returning to work on successive projects.
WG Carter was founded in 1947 by William George Carter in a cottage just 50m from where WG Carter is still based today. A bricklayer by trade, William George pursued his early career by providing teams of bricklayers to help with the post war re-building of London. He returned to his native Oxfordshire where he started to buy single plots of land on which he built a house to sell in order to buy the next piece of land. When William George fell ill, his son Peter took over and the firm moved into contracting work, carrying out extensions and alterations for house builders. Peter retired in 1995, handing over the reins to his sons, Paul and Roger.
Today William George’s grandsons, Paul and Roger, are still active as directors in the business. Over the last 30 years they have grown WG Carter into a well respected building firm with an enviable reputation for quality and attention to detail. They have put together a team of outstanding tradesmen who embrace the ethics and standards of WG Carter, helping to make it into the builder it is today.
In order to keep abreast of the latest materials, techniques and technology, WG Carter has an active training and development programme for all staff to learn new skills. Our success is dependant on having an experienced workforce combined with a network of reliable sub-contractors and specialist suppliers.
Each year we take on and support a number of apprentices, as we offer young people and returners-to-work a vital opportunity to start a career in a variety of building related trades. Testament to the personal commitment of these apprentices and to the high standards of our team who supervise and help them, we have produced a number of award winning apprentices over the years, many of whom are loyal members of staff.
We are proud to be a member of the Oxfordshire Construction Training Group steering committee, which aims to ensure adequate training for the future within the construction industry.
We are always keen to hear from skilled craftsmen, craftswomen, site and project managers who would be interested in joining the WG Carter team.
